1839, July 15: In the Battle of Neches, the Republic of Texas, now under a new president, Mirabeau LAMAR, attacks the chief settlement of the Cherokee, killing about 100, including DUWALI (THE BOWL). Many survivors leave for the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory.
