The Franklin County Prison Proposal EXPLAINED | Unpacking the Issue
Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
On October 31st, 2024 Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced the state purchased approximately 815 acres in Franklin County to build what would be the largest prison in Arkansas. Groups opposing the proposal have continued to air complaints and concerns. Sanders’ administration, along with state corrections officials, some legislators and supporters of the prison, maintain the Franklin County site is the best option and that something must be done to address chronic overcrowding in the state prison system. No one on either side seems to be backing down more than a year later. This is Unpacking The Issue. This video is up to date as of February 9th, 2026.
The Chickamauga Nation’s interest and involvement is mentioned starting at 23:33.
